Greg Prato escreveu a biografia da banda (se é que se pode chamar assim o projeto de Homme) para o site “allmusic”, a seguir transcrita em tradução livre do inglês.

As sementes para o método de “formação rotativa” pelo qual a Queens Of The Stone Age se tornou famosa foram plantadas noutro projeto paralelo, o Desert Sessions. Remontando aos anos 80, o guitarrista Josh Homme e seus amigos se reuniam para as famosas “festas do gerador”, que se constituíam de música ao vivo tocada em uma parte isolada da Califórnia, mais precisamente Palm Desert, com a eletricidade para os amplificadores sendo fornecida por um gerador de energia. Entre a sua saída da pioneira banda de stoner rock Kyuss e a formação da Queens, Homme encontrou muito tempo livre e decidiu reiniciar esses encontros. A única diferença foi que agora Homme iria gravar as sessões – chamadas de “Desert Sessions” –, enquanto uma lista de nomes reconhecidos do hard rock seriam convidados a participar. Com um trabalho em ritmo alucinante, um total de seis volumes foram gravados durante o período de um ano (1998-1999), para o selo independente Man’s Ruin, e contou com a participação de artistas como Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden, Hater, Wellwater Conspiracy), John McBain (Monster Magnet, Wellwater Conspiracy), Fred Drake (Earthlings), Brant Bjork (Kyuss, Fu Manchu), Alfredo Hernandez (Kyuss), Dave Catching (Earthlings), Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), e Peter Stahl (Wool, Earthlings), entre outros. Além de serem lançadas em CD (cada lançamento juntava dois volumes), as sessões também saíram em vinil (discos duplos de 10”). Mas quando a Man’s Ruin abandonou o projeto e Homme fundou a Queen Of The Stone Age com o ex-companheiro da Kyuss (e colaborador do projeto “Desert Sessions”) Nick Oliveri, a série sofreu uma pausa. A ruptura, porém, durou pouco, tendo a gravadora Southern Lord assumido os volumes 7 e 8, que tiveram grandes nomes como Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), Samantha Maloney (Hole, Motley Crue) e Alain Johannes (Eleven, Chris Cornell) tocando com Homme. Com a Queens Of The Stone Age fazendo grande sucesso com o lançamento de 2002, “Songs For The Deaf”, a Desert Sessions ganhou um pouco de interesse dos recém-iniciados. Os volumes 9 e 10 foram lançados pelo selo de Mike Patton, Ipecac, em 2003, e a formação incluía Dean Ween (Ween), Josh Freese (The Vandals), PJ Harvey, Twiggy Ramirez (Marilyn Manson), Joey Castillo (Danzig, QOTSA), Natasha Shneider (Eleven), e Troy Van Leeuwen (A Perfect Circle, QOTSA), entre outros. Outra atração da série Desert Sessions para os fãs da Queens Of The Stone Age é que várias canções lançadas nos volumes correspondentes reapareceram depois em regravações da Queens, a saber: “Millionaire”, “Avon”, “Hanging Tree”, etc.

a) as fichas dos discos foram extraídas dos sites “discogs” (www.discogs.com) – Volumes 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 e 9-10 – e “allmusic” (www.allmusic.com) – Volumes 7-8;

b) nos créditos, preservaram–se as brincadeiras e apelidos constantes nas fichas tiradas do site “discogs”, mesmo que à custa de alguma óbvia repetição de nomes, para manter o estilo manifestamente anárquico pretendido pelos músicos participantes e/ou pelo(s) mentor(es) do projeto;

c) perante algumas informações conflitantes entre os sites “discogs” e “allmusic”, com relação aos discos, optou-se pelos dados constantes do primeiro site, pelo seu conjunto informativo mais completo;

d) não foi possível obter informações confiáveis a respeito dos autores das músicas;

e) como subsídio, informa-se que na página http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Desert_Sessions consta a relação dos músicos que participaram das gravações, associados às suas atuais e ex-bandas, mas alguns dados estão incompletos.
