Paul Butterfield by Dugabowski

Para os aficcionados do blues, principalmente os mais velhos, Paul Butterfield (e as bandas às quais o seu nome está associado, como a Blues Band), dispensa apresentação. Entretanto, como o blog não visa apenas apenas aos entusiastas do blues, muito menos somente aos idosos entusiastas do blues, acredito que uma curta mas essencial biografia do músico não será demais; poderá ser útil tanto aos bluseiros menos entusiasmados quanto aos bluseiros mais jovens, o que já é reconfortante. Ei-la, portanto, extraída do livro “The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll”, editado por Holly George-Warren e Patrícia Romanowski (Fireside, New York, 2001, p. 135), em tradução livre (sempre) do inglês.

Paul Butterfield, um cantor branco e tocador de gaita-de-boca, que aprendeu sua arte com bluseiros negros, ajudou a impulsionar o ressurgimento do blues norte-americano dos anos 60. O adolescente Butterfield se aventurou em clubes do sul de Chicago, trabalhando eventualmente em jams ao vivo com Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Little Walter, Magic Sam e outras lendas do blues. Butterfield tocou com Elvin Bishop, seu colega da Universidade de Chicago, em bandas de bar chamadas Salt And Pepper Shakers e South Side Olympic Blues Team. Em 1963 ele formou a Paul Butterfield Blues Band, com dois ex-integrantes da banda de Howlin' Wolf, Jerome Arnold e Sam Lay, acrescentando mais tarde Bishop, Mark Naftalin e o guitarrista solo Mike Bloomfield. O grupo construiu um forte apoio local, e seu álbum de estréia foi lançado em 1965. No Newport Folk Festival daquele ano, depois de apresentar-se, a banda de Butterfield serviu de apoio a Bob Dylan na sua primeira e controversa performance eletrificada. O disco “East-West” mostrou prolongadas jams, além de revelar influências do jazz e da música indiana. Em seguida, Bloomfield deixou a banda para formar a Electric Flag; Bishop assumiu a guitarra solo.

Em 1967, Butterfield começou a primeira de muitas experiências, adicionando uma seção de metais à banda (incluindo David Sanborn no saxofone alto) e alterando sua orientação musical, do blues para R&B. Ele tocou no álbum de Muddy Waters de 1969, “Fathers And Sons”, e, em 1972, dissolveu a Blues Band, mudando-se para Woodstock, New York. Lá ele formou a Butterfield's Better Days com Amos Garrett, Geoff Muldaur e Ronnie Barron.

Butterfield fez uma aparição no concerto da The Band, “Last Waltz”, em 1976, e no final dos anos 70 ele excursionou com a Levon Helm's RCO All Stars e com o ex-baixista da The Band na Danko-Butterfield Band. No começo de 1980, durante a gravação de “Nort-South” em Memphis, Butterfield teve um intestino perfurado e peritonite, enfermidades que o obrigaram a se submeter a três graves cirurgias ao longo dos anos posteriores. O próximo e último disco de Butterfield, “The Legendary Paul Butterfield Rides Again”, saiu em 1986, um ano antes de o músico de 44 anos, um alcoólatra, ser encontrado morto em seu apartamento.

f) os dois discos em que Paul Butterfield participa com outros artistas (What’s Shakin’, de 1967, e Woodstock, de 1969) estão aqui catalogados como “discos em conjunto”, porém foram disponibilizadas apenas as faixas em que o músico toca;
g) sempre que isso se mostrou possível, estão apontados os compositores das músicas;
h) as fichas técnicas (faixas e músicos) dos discos foram extraídas dos próprios álbuns e, quando isso não foi possível, dos sites “allmusic”, “discogs” e “chrome oxide”, todos em inglês.

Aponcho, há consenso da crítica especializada no sentido de que a melhor fase do Paul Butterfield seria a inicial, com os discos da Paul Butterfield Blues Band, de 1965 e 1966, com os guitarristas Bloomfield e Bishop; seria um bom começo para quem não conhece muito o PB. Mas a minha recomendação é para o bootleg de 1970, Live In A&R Studios: é muito bom. Um abraço e boa audição.
